Obtaining a new ID card

In Massachusetts, there are two forms of ID cards. There is an ID card for anyone under 21 years old, and a liquor ID card for anyone 21 years or older. Most places that serve liquor in Massachusetts require a driver's license or liquor ID card if you are to purchase alcohol.

In Massachusetts, an identification card (whether you are over or under 21 years old) is $25.

Checks or money orders, credit or debit cards (MasterCard, Visa, Discover or American Express) are not accepted in all locations; please contact your local RMV to see what form of payment is accepted.


To obtain a Massachusetts liquor ID card you will need to meet the following requirements:

  • 21 years or older
  • You cannot currently hold a Massachusetts driver's license
  • Valid passport (or)
  • Social Security card

To obtain a Massachusetts ID card you will need to meet the following requirements:

  • 14 years or older
  • Resident of Massachusetts
  • You cannot currently hold a driver's license from any other state
  • Valid passport (or)
  • Social Security card
  • If you are under 18 years of age, you will need a parent/guardian's consent on your application
