1: Get Started with Online Application Assistance

2: By mail

Some drivers prefer to handle the renewal process by mail, rather than taking advantage of assistance services, visiting the RMV in person, or via available online services. Service by mail is available with limitations. Read below for additional details or visit your local RMV.

3: Via a RMV office

If your specific needs require an in-person visit, most, if not all, driver license services can be handled at your local RMV office. Varying RMV offices sometimes supply different types of services so you will need to check before your visit to make sure the RMV closest to you provides the service you require. In addition, you can call to see if your RMV allows you to make a personal appointment.

To get your new drivers license in Massachusetts, you’ll need to visit your local RMV office.

For those 18 and older, you’ll need the following documentation to prove Massachusetts residence, signature, and date of birth. Documents might include:

  • Employment Authorization card
  • SSN number
  • U.S. Citizen Identification card
  • Record of departure in your passport
  • Certificate of citizenship
  • Non-Resident Alien Canadian Border Crossing card
  • Temporary Resident Identification card
  • Resident Alien card
  • Certificate of naturalization
  • Permanent Resident Re-Entry permit
  • Refugee Travel document

Other documents can include:

  • Personal check that's canceled
  • Original copy of your foreign birth certificate
  • Current or expired identification card
  • Utility bill
  • Original school transcript, not more than 12 months old
  • Letterhead from your school authored by the principal to confirm you’re a student there

If you are under 18 years of age you'll need:

  • One document proving date of birth
  • Parental consent
  • SSN number that can be verified

Fill out the application from the RMV office and pay the $30 fee. This allows you to take the written test for your licence. You need to get at least 18 of the 25 questions correct in order to pass the test.

If you do not pass, you'll need to resubmit all documentation and forms to take the test again. Call 857-368-8105 to take the exam orally if you have a disability that prevents you from taking the written test.

Road Test
Study the manual located here: http://www.massrmv.com/rmv/dmanual/

You’ll need to supply a suitable vehicle for the test which is insured and registered. The vehicle must be acceptable to the examiner. The vehicle must have an emergency break to be accepted as a test vehicle. There is a $20 fee to take the test, and if you fail you must pay this fee again to take the test again.

  • If you are younger than 18, you must have a clean driving record for six consecutive months prior to the date you scheduled your road test.
  • if you have any medical conditions, get permission from your doctor prior to taking your test.
