Changing your Name on your Massachusetts Drivers License
Here are the steps you need to take to change your name on your driver’s license in Massachusetts. You will need to change your name at the Social Security office before this will reflect on your license. Here are the steps you need to take.

This is the Social Security Administration website. Here you can request your name change and get the required documents.
Gather Documents
You may need:
- Marriage document
- Divorce decree
- Certificate of Naturalization showing a new name or Court-ordered name change
- U.S. citizenship (if you have not established your citizenship with us) or immigration status (including Department of Homeland Security permission to work in the United States.

Take or mail your completed application and documents to your local Social Security office. All documents must be original and not copies of any kind.
At the RMV
Have the following documentation available with you at the RMV. You won’t need all this documentation. Be sure you have at least your MA Driver's License, MA Vehicle Registration, and your Social Security number.
